Goodbye, 2017

Image
Dear Visitors, I'm ready for this year to be over. I'm ready to start anew. When the year 2017 started, everyone thought the whole world would implode. But here we are at the end of December and we're still standing.  I'm also ready to start the year over because I'm ready to let go of all the shit that happened at the beginning of 2017. The beginning of this year sucked mostly because my best friend of 12+ years and I went our separate ways because of a stupid election. It really hurt to see that sometimes people allow politics interfere with their relationships. Besides the loss of a beautiful friendship, the beginning of the year held a lot of uncertainty. I applied for Graduate School, but still had this fear that I might be wasting my time and that I wouldn't identify with my peers or that I would totally be terrible at my internship placement. It wasn't until I started the Fall Semester that my fears turned to ash. I ended up...

Totally Missed Krampusnacht!

Image
Dear Visitor, How are you this Christmas Season? I finally finished this semester and can now go back to updating this blog. God, I missed this! Today I want to talk about Krampusnacht. You know how Santa rewards children with toys and candy for being good during the year? Well, for every good thing there is an opposite. Krampus is the Anti-Santa who comes and drags naughty children away. According to folklore, Krampus is a half-goat demon looking thing. This makes me wonder if this is where we came up with the idea that the Devil looks like a half-goat demon with a pitchfork. On December 5th evening, you celebrate Krampusnacht. I've seen some videos where there are parades and festivals held for Krampus. This is mostly a European holiday, so its celebrated in places like Austria, Croatia, Bavaria, Hungary, etc. It is also customary to offer Krampus schnapps just like how you leave Santa milk and cookies. I always wanted to celebrate Krampusnacht, but it'...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Image
Dear Visitor, Apologies for the late post, or rather, blank post for most of the day. I thought I had this post scheduled for Saturday. Anyways, I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving surrounded by your loved ones. I do want to mention that I may be late on posts until mid-December. I have finals coming soon and I really need to focus on those for now. But I might be able to squeeze in a post or two. It depends if I'm feeling brave or not. Until next time, Friend! ~M.G.

That One Whiny Chick

Image
Dear Visitor, I hope you all had a fabulous Halloween! Mine was more laid back and I had to throw a last minute costume together, but I enjoyed myself! Anyway, I wanted to take a step back and talk about something else. I mentioned before that I'm a grad student getting my Masters in Social Work. It's a lot of hard work, but I love the challenge. I especially love my internship. However, not everyone is as enthusiastic about school as I am. I wanted to talk about that one Whiny Chick that is in every class. You know the one. The one where everything is so hard, nothing is ever fair, and they feel "attacked" when you tell them to suck it up. So I have this classmate who actually has the balls to ask if the final exam is mandatory. I've noticed that she always asks if things are mandatory. For example, we have labs that we have to complete. It's written in the syllabus AND our professor actually told us the first day of class that ...

CONTRACTED Made Me Want to Barf

Image
Written/Directed: Eric England Starring: Najarra Townsend, Caroline Williams, Alice Macdonald Synopsis: After Samantha is raped at a party and wakes up with a hang over, she notices that something is completely off with her body. She's sensitive to sound, she gets sick, and despite her worries, the doctor she sees has no idea what's wrong with her. As time goes on, Samantha slowly decays from the inside out and loses her grasp of her sanity. One thing that I HATED about this movie was that the synopsis that generally describes this movie, starts with "after a one night stand". *Grabs feminist soap box* That is NOT what happened! She was raped! How do I know that? She told the guy she wasn't interested and that she was a lesbian. Then after she is incapacitated, he takes her to his car and rapes her. You can hear her say "NO" throughout the crime. Also what doctor just uses a stethoscope and knows what you have? What about a blood test? When s...

Flatliners (2017) Wasn't Terrible

Image
Dear Visitor, I finally went to go see FLATLINERS (2017) a couple of weeks ago and I must say that I didn't hate it. Critics have been giving some nasty ratings, even Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 0% rating. Here's what it's about. Courtney (Ellen Page) is a med student who wants to know what happens to a person after they die. She enlists the help of her classmates Jamie (James Norton) and Sophia (Kiersey Clemons) to stop her heart, record what happens to her brain, and revive her. Fellow classmates Ray (Diego Luna) and Marlo (Nina Dobrev) stumble on what going on and help out. For the ones that actually flatline, they unknowingly bring back past sins that haunted them. There were some nice jump scares to it, the story wasn't bad, but there was just something missing from it. Here's where I think they dropped the ball on it. 1) The Characters: I didn't care about Courtney, Jamie, or Sophia. The only ones I liked were Ray and Marlo because I liked...

Miss Me?

Dear Visitor, My greatest apologies for not keeping up with my Haunted Library. It turns out that the Masters Program has taken up majority of my time. Which is terrible because it doesn't leave much room for blogging or writing in general. However, as we learned in my Social Work classes, self care is very important. So maybe and can squeeze some time for this blog. Anyways, just because I haven't been writing doesn't mean I've been ignoring the horror genre. I have plenty of movies that I would love to talk with you about. So please be patient while I reorganize life and find the right balance for everything. With Love, M.G.
