That One Whiny Chick

Dear Visitor,

I hope you all had a fabulous Halloween! Mine was more laid back and I had to throw a last minute costume together, but I enjoyed myself!

Anyway, I wanted to take a step back and talk about something else. I mentioned before that I'm a grad student getting my Masters in Social Work. It's a lot of hard work, but I love the challenge. I especially love my internship. However, not everyone is as enthusiastic about school as I am.

I wanted to talk about that one Whiny Chick that is in every class. You know the one. The one where everything is so hard, nothing is ever fair, and they feel "attacked" when you tell them to suck it up.

So I have this classmate who actually has the balls to ask if the final exam is mandatory. I've noticed that she always asks if things are mandatory. For example, we have labs that we have to complete. It's written in the syllabus AND our professor actually told us the first day of class that "THESE LABS ARE MANDATORY! YOU CAN'T MAKE THEM UP!" For our first lab, my classmate shows up late and then spends the first hour of class complaining that she didn't know that the labs were mandatory and thought that she could skype it in. She also thought that it was "unrealistic" to demand this of her and she was upset she couldn't go on a trip that she planned on the day we had lab.

This complaining continues today. Just this morning she thought that the final exam wasn't mandatory. She then went on to express how exams shouldn't be used because they don't truly show how a student learns. She honestly thought that these exams weren't mandatory to get our masters degree. What the hell is going on with people nowadays? I'm amazed she's asking these questions since she's been in this program for a year and a half. You'd think she'd understand how things work...

Have any of you met that kind of classmate? I can't be the only one!
