Let's Talk AMERICAN GODS
Dear Visitor,
I've always been fascinated with mythology of any kind. When I was a kid, my friends and I used to LOVE reading Greek and Egyptian mythology. We would sneak a library book into the playground during recess(it was prohibited to bring library books outside) and read these stories. We used to pretend that we were this gods and make up our own adventures. It was our favorite game to play. So when they announced AMERICAN GODS was going to be a show, I was enthusiastic about it.
I was mostly interested because Bryan Fuller is involved with the show and I absolutely loved HANNIBAL so I knew that this show would be gory as well as beautiful. Honestly, HANNIBAL was a work of art on a television screen. Despite the gruesome crime scenes and psychedelic dream sequences, it was pleasing to the eye. I just knew that we could get that crazy flavor with AMERICAN GODS and I wasn't disappointed.
The show begins with Shadow Moon(Ricky Whittle), being released early from prison when he is told that his wife, Laura(Emily Browning), died in a car accident with his best friend. Down on his luck, Shadow meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday(Ian McShane). Wednesday offers him a job as his bodyguard and opens his eyes to a world where ancients gods and traditions clash with the new world order.
I think the "Coming To America" parts of each episode are so beautifully written. It explains how the old gods of immigrants were brought to America. So in a sense, this show is about immigration and what makes America so diverse. So far we've seen how the Vikings brought Odin to America as well as how Anansi came to our shores. It's a great way to get viewers to think about their own roots. Where did your ancestors come from? What traditions and gods did they bring with them? Do you still respect those traditions?
There's more to tackle on this show but I think that's enough of a taste for now. I'd like to write more when the season is over and I can't wait to see what happens this season!
I hope you enjoy this show!
Always,
M.G.
