Enjoy Cults with "The Veil"
Dear Visitor,
I watched this movie a while ago and I'm not just getting around to talking about it. I think that this movie is amazing! I love Blumhouse because they always make great horror and suspense movies.
This film stars Jessica Alba, Lily Rabe, and Thomas Jane. Maggie (Jessica Alba) contacts the sole survivor of Heaven's Veil, a religious cult that committed mass suicide. She convinces Sarah Hope (Lily Rabe) to return to the compound where this horrible tragedy happened and make a documentary about what really happened there. While at the compound, the film crew discover old tapes that show them different experiments the Heaven's Veil cult conducted. The cult leader, Jim Jacobs (Thomas Jane), literally believed that he had the key to immortality. While the crew tries to piece together this house of fanatics, they notice strange things happening around the house.
I really liked this one because it bounced back and forth from being a "mockumentary" to a regular horror film. The tapes offered some great backstory to the Heaven's Veil cult. You had a chance, along with the characters, to see the cult progress from the main cult leader to the events that led to the mass suicide. I found those to be the most interesting mostly because I think cults are just fascinating in general.
As for the characters, I had a major problem with Jessica Alba's character. In every horror movie, there's always that one character who knows shit is going down but wants everyone to stay. For example, a crew member goes missing and cellphones don't work so that seem like a great time to get the hell out of there right? Wrong! Dear old Maggie decides "we're so close" and "we have to stay". I repeat...a crew member is missing, no cell reception, freaky shit is happening around the house, you found a dead body, and you think it's a great idea to stay? Someone is glutton for punishment.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie and I recommend it. It's currently available on Netflix.
With Love,
M.G.
